Start with the whole room

A door, a length of skirting or a new piece of timber rarely sits on its own. It meets a floor, a wall and other finishes. Before choosing individual items, look at the room as a whole and decide what you want to keep, replace or repair.

Photos of the existing room are a useful starting point. Include the corners, thresholds and areas that are not working well, as well as the view you would like to improve.

Be clear about the finish

Painted timber and a visible wood finish ask for different decisions about appearance. Bring examples of the look you want and discuss the material, profile and finish together. A small sample can make a choice easier than a photograph alone.

If you want new work to match existing features, point out what matters most: the shape of a moulding, the width of a frame or the relationship between adjoining rooms.

Agree what the job includes

Make a short list of the work you expect. Include removal of existing fittings, disposal, making good and decoration where relevant. Discussing these items early helps everyone understand where the carpentry stops and another trade begins.

Also mention any flooring or decorating work you are planning. The order of the jobs can affect both access and the finish.

Send your postcode, a brief description, photographs and approximate measurements. Explain whether the work is a repair, a replacement or part of a wider refurbishment. Measurements help frame the conversation; final dimensions can be checked before work is agreed.
